Να παραθέσω ένα μικρό κομμάτι (σόρυ, στα αγγλικά) που έγραψε ο Harold Bloom πριν καμιά δεκαριά χρόνια, για να δείξω πόσο σημαντικές παραμένουν στις μέρες μας η Ιλιάδα και η Οδύσσεια. Το ότι πέρασε από πάνω τους ο οδοστρωτήρας του σχολείου είναι ένας λόγος παραπάνω να ξαναασχοληθούμε. "As the West has developed a more acute sense of cultural belatedness, it has turned from Achilles to Ulysses. The Iliad seems more remote from us than the Odyssey, almost as though the story of the wrath of Achilles is Classical, and that of Ulysses' return to Penelope is Romantic. Such impressions are illusory, yet pragmatically they enforce themselves. Both poems are surpassingly harsh, and yet the heroism of Achilles seems more tragic, and the resourcefulness of Odysseus (to give him back his Greek name) both more comic and more of a model for us."
