Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως ο δικηγόρος των ενός από τους δύο βασικούς υπαίτιους (οι φίλες των θυτών επίσης κατηγορήθηκαν ως συνεργοί τους, μετά την επίθεση βέβαια) επιχείρησε να χρησιμοποιήσει την υπερασπιστική γραμμή που ακούει στο απεχθές όνομα: "gay panic defence" (*) ...υποστηρίζοντας ότι ο πελάτης του δρούσε υπό κατάσταση "προσωρινής τρέλας" δικαιολογημένη από τις υποτιθέμενες σεξουαλικές προτάσεις που έκανε ο Σέπαρντ στο θύτη. Ευτυχώς κάτι τέτοιο απορρίφθηκε.Αυτό που έχει ενδιαφέρον στην υπόθεση (εκτός φυσικά από τον τραγικό χαμό του Σέπαρντ) είναι το αν και κατά πόσο τα αρνητικά συναισθήματα – μίσος προς τους gay έπαιξαν το ρόλο τους στην αποτρόπαια συμπεριφορά των θυτών.(*)Λίγα περισσότερα για αυτήν την αηδία:"The gay panic defense is a legal defense, usually against charges of assault or murder.
